RUGGEDISATION

Definition from The Oxford Dictionary:
“Designed or improved to be hard-wearing or shock-resistant.”

For over 20 years APC Technology has provided rugged solutions designed to survive the harshest environments on earth. We have a proven track record of taking off the shelf products (COTS) and ruggedising them to ensure they survive any application, in any environment, in any location.

From a user’s perspective, rugged is the computer’s ability to keep operating under all exposed working conditions. But each user may want a solution- for example a company who are analysing pipelines in out back Australia are looking for something easy to carry, with a high bright screen whilst being exposed to a lot of dust/dirt. Meanwhile another company who are designing the cockpit for a military plane user needs a touchscreen display designed to fit into a console with a predefined size and weight plus the ability to withstand extreme vibrations.

The three most common scales for defining ruggedised equipment is temperature range, ingress protection (IP) and MIL-STD 810G.

Temp range: This defines the operational temperature that a solution can perform at. Often you will see storage and operational listed. The storage relates to the equipment not being used. A military solution typically would need to perform at a operational temperature of -55 Celsius up to +85 Celsius.

ip-rating-chartIP rating:  The ingress protection rating is used to specify the level of environmental protection of electrical equipment against solids and liquids. The rating is made up of two digits. The first reflects the level of protection against dust. The 2nd reflects the level of protection against liquids.

MIL-STD 810G: This is a standard issued by the United States Army’s development test command. The standard consists of a series of environmental tests to prove the equipment qualifies to the standard to survive in the field. Thought they were originally designed to test military equipment, it is now used to test a wide range of military and industrial equipment.

Please Note: There are an extensive range of ruggedised tests created for different industry sectors. For example hazardous location equipment needs to have an IECEx certification if it is being used in a zone 0, 1 or 2.
