APC lands a second nomination at DTC awards

APC Technology has been shortlisted for the resilient and adaptive award.

We are delighted to be the only South Australian company to be nominated for two of the Defence Teaming Centre awards which will take place in October at the Adelaide convention centre.

In 2019 we were the winner of the resilient and adaptive award and at that time we felt we were a worthy recipient. As a company we had achieved many of our goals and had developed a strategy to continue growth in the defence sector.

At the beginning of 2020 none of us could have imaged the social, financial, professional and personal impact of COVID-19. As communities, businesses and individuals, we needed to adapt rapidly to frequently changing circumstances. Being resilient and adaptive became a requirement.

During the year we managed to achieve milestones and gain successes even under the circumstances. Find out about some of our highlights. When we reached the end of 2020 we felt we had continued to personify the resilient and innovative qualities of the award we had received.

With the arrival of 2021, the mood was buoyant with a COVID vaccination  in the pipeline. Australia had become a global example on how to manage the pandemic and at APC we felt we had navigated one of the most challenging years successfully. Then in February we suffered a fire in our manufacturing facility which resulted in the complete loss of the area. This meant the components, equipment and customer projects which were partially completed or ready to ship  were destroyed. We initially believed it was a minor incident but it became apparent as the day unfolded that this would impact our customers, suppliers and staff significantly.

Unlike COVID, this situation effected APC Technology at the core of the business. It meant digging deep and again grasping our resilient and adaptive attitudes to ensure recovery was possible. Events like these can be catastrophic for a business but the APC staff were back the day after the fire, mucking in, cleaning up and working on ways we could continue to support our customers.

The messages and support from our customers, suppliers and the defence community added to our determination to not only recover but to use the opportunity to make improvements. Within six weeks the manufacturing facility was gutted and rebuilt. We ensured ESD principles were integral to the new facilities along with a focus on ergonomics. Additionally, we took on board the recommendations that had been made during audits by Primes to elevate security in the area.

Though the impact of the fire was monumental to the company we continued to move forward. The engineering department pursued new projects whilst still working on existing ones. This included the APC GVA display which is an integral solution to the C4 EDGE team. We continued with plans to improve our cyber security which is currently in progress with the aim to obtain DISP membership and achieve ISO 27001.

We are grateful to those individuals and businesses that reached out. Whether it was the delivery of cold drinks and snacks, to the offer of office space which enabled us to start manufacturing almost immediately.  These acts of kindness demonstrated the capacity for South Australian business to support one another – a trait which exemplifies our state’s ability to work together for a positive outcome.

Whether we are the recipient of the resilient and adaptive award, as a company we felt this was a mechanism to acknowledge our staff, suppliers and customers for being part of this journey and supporting us as we recovered. We believe from the ashes we have become stronger.
