The KBIM2-IS is fully welded from stainless steel. The membrane is covered with a conductive stainless steel shim to prevent static build up.

APC Partners with TestLab to Rapidly Print Soft Touch Buttons for a GVA Smart Display Prototype

At APC Technology we proactively research and connect with organisations, aiming to expand the depth and breadth of our supply chain. The impact of COVID resulted in the pursuit of onshore partners to reduce risk. Our collaboration with the University of South Australia’s Industry 4.0 Testlab is an example of a new partnership established during this time but one that will continue in the future.

We approached Testlab to manufacture 3D printed soft-touch buttons which would be integrated into our newly developed Generic Vehicle Architecture (GVA) smart display. The requirement was urgent with a tight deadline as the prototype would be showcased at Land Forces 2021 -an international land defence expo with 12,500 visitors from industry, government, and defence. This event was one of the first face to face expos in 2021 and offered significant business opportunities.

Iterative printing with the Stratasys J735 Polyjet printer allowed the Testlab to facilitate a rapid turn-around of the required buttons for preproduction display. The first print was a glossy finish, but this left a sticky surface feeling. With the multi-material capability of the J735 printer, the Testlab team produced a second print in a matte finish using the rubber-like Agilus material and this proved to be successful.

The print sets were completed in four hours and four minutes with minimal clean up and were ready for use the next day.

The first version did not hit the mark, but they were able to use an alternate material and still ensure we achieved the deadline.”

As part of our commitment to the C4EDGE project, APC Technology has now supplied the 10.4” GVA Smart Display, designed to process data rich information in real-time and capable of hosting the C4ISR (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) application for tactical and combat vehicles.

The Testlab focuses on various sectors including defence, space, mining, electronics, agri-tech/food, medical/healthcare and automotive.
