Helping Families Living with Cerebral Palsy

How a PCIM joystick is making life easier for Nick Armstrong.

Nick Armstrong has been using an APC Technology PCIM joystick for over 10 years. Cerebral palsy (CP) has affected his fine motor control, making typing on a standard keyboard and using an off the shelf mouse impossible. Nick’s mother researched what options were available to make Nick’s life easier and through the Cerebral Palsy Alliance was put in contact with APC Technology (APCT).

Nick’s parents explained, “We originally tried various alternatives to a standard keyboard such as big-key versions but they still proved to be a frustrating solution. It was one of the therapists at the Cerebral Palsy Alliance who introduced us to the APCT joystick (PCIM) when Nick was still in primary school. He is now 20 and access to a computer is crucial for his independence but also his social life. Like most young people today, he connects with friends and family through facebook, email and a range of social media.”

“Nick uses the device with a Jellybean switch to point and click, which is great. Windows also has a range of accessibility options enabling him to type using the on-screen keyboard and that has been a massive leap for his independence. He can do his homework, search the internet, access applications and watch videos, dvds on the PC.”

“Nick uses the joystick every day, often for hours on end. The CP affects his muscle tone so he applies a large amount of force to the device when moving the pointer. Other devices we tried weren’t as durable and broke easily. The APC Technology joystick has been unfailing and 10 years on, it is still performing. I found it easily anchors to the desktop with screws, or the strongest velcro and it’s easy to clean with a wet cloth and any domestic cleaning agents.”

“Over the ten years we have requested support from APC Technology on a few occasions due to Nick’s grip being so strong that his fingertips would tear the rubber. Due to the importance of the joystick to Nick’s everyday life, we found the service department to be extremely efficient in providing a prompt turn around. On the last occasion I also sent them a dome shield which Nick uses on his electric wheelchair to help protect the rubber boot. Again the service department accommodate this request with no additional charge.”

“The joystick really has made a difference to Nick’s everyday life and I cannot fault the ongoing performance and durability based on the level of use, both in time and the physical pressure placed on it.”

About the APC Technology PCIM Joystick

The PCIM Industrial Mouse is an inductive joystick that emulates a mouse. The mouse cursor speed is proportional to displacement of the joystick thus providing both speed and precision. It is unaffected by dust and water and sealed to IP65. Constructed from zinc plated and powder coated steel and with rubber feet, the PCIM does not slip.
