MIL-SPEC Lightweight Diesel Generator

APC Technology Delivers Compact, High-Performance Diesel Generator for Australian Defence Forces

Daronmont Technologies approached APC Technology to partner on a project supplying diesel generators to the Australian defence forces.  The key requirements were to meet specifications based on size, weight, output and the fact that it needed to perform and survive in rugged conditions. This included extreme temperatures, altitude and weather conditions.

APC Technology partnered with a South Australian generator manufacturer with over 30 years of experience to fulfill a project for the Australian Defence Forces. While the manufacturer possessed extensive expertise in generator construction, they did not have the specific knowledge required to meet the project's stringent defence specifications.

APC, with its proven understanding and application of defence standards, played a key role in the project. By combining our expertise with the manufacturer's construction capabilities, APC designed a highly compact yet powerful and user-friendly generator solution.

Achieving a Lightweight and Compact Design

APC's engineering team meticulously considered various options to reduce the generator's weight. Ultimately, they opted for an aluminum frame instead of steel. Aluminum's significantly lower density (approximately three times less than steel) offered a substantial weight reduction. To further reduce size constraints, the team chose a 3000RPM engine over the standard 1500RPM option, enabling a smaller footprint that fit seamlessly within the specified dimensions.

The Value of In-House Capabilities

APC's commitment to in-house capabilities ensured efficient project execution. The initial design included electrical box components that weren't rated for the required low temperatures. By leveraging our in-house thermal chamber, APC conducted rigorous confidence testing, allowing us to certify the components for the client.

For shock and vibration testing, APC utilized SolidWorks Simulation software for advanced finite element analysis. This software enabled us to perform virtual testing, eliminating the need for external compliance testing houses, which could have added significant cost and production delays.
